  • Three days of competitions, three days of winners and three days of fun!  ExpoBuild China was an incredible event and was a great setting for another exciting, informative and challenging GIGA Material Challenge.

Back by popular demand and, and for three solid days (March 31st - April 2nd) thousands of visitors from the design, architecture and construction industries flooded the Shanghai New International Exposition Center, eager to see the latest in material and design innovations.  Manufacturers and designers alike were able to network, exchange ideas and impart their expert knowledge to one another in a forum tailored specifically to their respective trades.

GIGA's Material Challenge debuted at ExpoBuild China, bringing our one-of-a-kind materials competition to a new format and a new audience. Leading manufacturers, Laticrete, Novalis, Koshii Woods, Gabriel, Interface, Dulux Pro, and 3Form each created 15 minute hands on challenges to showcase their products’ inherent features, unique performance or special green attributes. No other industry event offers designers a more focused learning opportunity. Teams of two competed to complete challenges and a chance to win iPad minis. Competing teams were put to the test and bragging rights were on the line!

Teams were required do everything from build a "NovaClic House of Cards" from Novalis LVT with its unique interlocking NovaClic system, to assembling a full-scale, raised deck floor from Koshii Woods using their special outdoor plank wood.

Dulux Pro challenged designers with an intense game of "Colorful Life", which showcased their vast paint color palette and Interface Carpets posed designers the ultimate puzzle in "Create More"; a DIY carpet installation with 10 different patterns to try.

Gabriel Textiles brought out the color matching skills of designers and shed new light on their fabulous felt fabrics. 3Form pushed competitors for speed, agility and accuracy with "Ditto Presto" their diverse Ditto 3D system. Rounding out the Challenge was Laticrete whose Hydro Ban and Stainless Grout activity had designers painting water-tight seals and testing the stain proof qualities of grout with soy sauce, cola and even coffee.

Never before have so many manufacturers joined in a GIGA Material Challenge and the resulting feedback from designers was a resounding, "We loved it!"  "We learned so much!:"

On day one, after heated competition a mere 32 points separated the second place team from the grand prize winners, Team 10 from 3+1 Design Studio went home with brand new, custom-engraved, iPad minis.

Day two of the Material Challenge was as exciting as the first, with a promising roster packed full of talented designers and architects from world renown architecture and design firms.  For several rounds, the competing teams were neck and neck and it appeared the day would end in a tie. In the end, the designer + architect duo, Team 8 from Hassel Architects took the grand prize and are also proud owners of new custom iPad minis.

The third and final day at ExpoBuild ended with teams tallying record-high scores. Team AIA Shanghai came within a hair of taking home the grand prize. Though, the talents of Hassel Architects once again reigned over the Material Challenge as their second team tallied nearly a perfect score.

Win or lose, all Material Challenge participants had a great time while learning something new about manufacturers and their products. Unlike any other event, the Material Challenge gives manufactures a brand new way to introduce themselves and their materials to a wide audience of design professionals, educating them in a most memorable way.

Be sure to stay tuned, our next Material Challenge is just around the corner. Spaces will be limited, don’t miss your chance to build, learn and win!
