GIGA hosted the final session of it’s third annual Material Challenge series at the Yang Museum of Design in Shanghai on the 25th of October.
Architects and designers learn more about products when they experience them first-hand. By pairing the design community with participating suppliers, GIGA Material Challenges offer a day of intensive play-based learning with materials and finishes. There isn't a more interactive, materials-focused competition that is this much fun anywhere!
Architects and Designers from top firms in Shanghai filled the Yang Museum for a day of friendly competition. The team with highest score in a series of Supplier-designed challenges wins GIGA Material Challenge. This time, the grand prize was an Apple Watch, and second and third-placed teams won designer bags from MRKT.
Competition was incredibly tight, with the winning team determined only at the final challenge of the day. In the end, designers from HPP, returning champions from a previous Material Challenge, beat out runners-up from The Langone Group by 3 points. Third place went to a team of exchange students from Polytechnic of Milan.
To mark it’s third anniversary, the GIGA Material Challenge organizers together with Yang Design Museum held a lecture called ‘Innovation Smart City’ during the lunch break.
Our participating manufactures included: Voxflor, Camria Fabric, HunterDouglas, Xingyue Carpet and Universal Fibers. Check out the tasks brought forward by each brand:
A regular manufacturer participant at Material Challenge events, Voxflor tasked designers with creating an abstract artwork using carpet tiles with a uniquely Shanghainese theme, “Old Koehler, Shikumen”.
The English brand Camira asked teams to use their fabrics to recreate iconic British landmarks or symbols.
Designers had to speed-sketch architectural facade or interior drawings incorporating HunterDouglas Luxalon Suncontrol or metal ceiling products within 30 minutes.
Xingyue had teams create ‘Magical Forest’ themed works of art using carpet tiles and natural objects.
Designers created fiber art using Universal’s 100% pre-consumer recycled yarns inspired by the theme ‘Smart Green’.
