Saturday Oct 25th proved to be a great day for another fun filled GIGA Material Challenge hosted by the Yang Design Museum in Shanghai. This was our second Material Challenge at the Yang Museum and the blue skies outside made for a sunny experience inside!
The GIGA Material Challenge centers around the premise that architects and designers learn more about building materials and finishes when they experience them first-hand. By pairing the design community with participating suppliers, the GIGA Material Challenge offers a day of intensive learning and detailed demonstrations covering the technical aspects of different products and building materials. There isn't a more interactive, materials-focused competition that is this much fun anywhere!
Architects and Designers from top firms in Shanghai, filled the Yang Museum for a day of fun and friendly competition. At stake were one-of-a-kind engraved iPad minis for the top scoring team members as well as bragging rights for becoming the reigning champions of the GIGA Material Challenge! Designer totes and iPad sleeves furnished by MRKT went to the second and third-place winners and 16 lucky winners received a pair of tickets to the BMW PGA Golf Tournament compliments of Novalis.
Providing tasty and healthy snacks throughout the competition, was Pure & Whole Vegetarian Restaurants who fuelled our hungry teams as they made their way from each of the four activities.
Our participating manufacturers included, Voxflor, Forbo, Loba and Sirewall, and the activity that each prepared for this Material Challenge were as informative as they were fun!
Voxflor's "Strike" challenge brought out the fashion designer in our participants and had teams cutting, trimming and even sewing Voxflor's latest carpet series "Strike" to create fashionable, wearable carpet garments. Using Voxflor's carpet in this unorthodox way allowed participants to feel the carpet's unique fiber qualities.
Forbo took framed art to a whole new level with their "Innovative Marmoleum Collage" challenge. Working around an original and creative theme, teams had a seemingly limitless palette of pre-cut, geometric and beautifully tonal pieces of Forbo Marmoleum with which to create an original piece of artwork. The results were framed art, displayed for all to appreciate.
Loba's "Not Just a Floor, a Uniquely Designed Floor" proved just that. Teams gathered around a variety of Loba stains to determine which Impact Oil to use for their wood panels. The results illustrated Loba's tinting system indeed has limitless color possibilities.
SIREWALL took the Material Challenge to heart and literally had teams getting their hands dirty! The "Build Your Own Rammed Earth" challenge had participants mixing water into dry mix and ramming the colored layers into a final design that they could take home as an art piece!
The final point tally for this Material Challenge was among the closest we've ever had. In fact it was the first time in MC history we have experienced a tie! After a completing a nail-biting tie breaker consisting of a series of GIGA-inspired triva questions the winners were determined!
In Third Place and winners of the MRKT iPad sleeves was Team 8 with members Sheng Ling, Qian Yin, Zheng Chihao and Sheng Kai.
In Second Place and winners of the MRKT tote bags was Team 4 with members Shao Jie, Chen Lin, Wu Ling and Mei Lan.
Our Grand Prize winners and proud new owners of engraved GIGA Material Challenge iPad Minis was Team 7 with members Ren Qi, Zhuo Jingyang, Kang Minjeong, Ferdinand Fleckenstein.
Congratulations to all our winners and to everyone who participated in the Material Challenge. We hope all of you had a great time learning about these innovative materials, their unique applications and the best way to specify them on future projects.
Stay tuned for the Material Challenge calendar for 2015 and get your team prepped for another year of fun!
